Backyard Birding at Viva Wetlands
Great Backyard Bird Count at Viva Wetlands
Jungle Buddies Tours recently hosted a free bird walk at Viva Wetlands in Virar, a haven for birdwatchers just outside Mumbai. This event, held during the Great Backyard Bird Count, offered a fantastic opportunity to explore the diverse birdlife of this unique location.
Viva Wetlands, with its mix of wetlands and dry shrublands, provides the perfect habitat for a variety of bird species. Our walk revealed a wealth of avian activity, from majestic raptors to vibrant waders and passerines.
Raptors in Flight:
We were fortunate to spot impressive raptors, including Western Marsh Harriers and a pair of Short-toed Snake Eagles soaring overhead.
Waders by the Water:
The wetlands teemed with waders, including Wood Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plovers, and both Little and Temminck’s Stints.
Passerines in the Shrubland:
Among the passerines, we observed the Bengal Weaver, a species sadly declining in the Mumbai region. Scaly-breasted Munias and Red Munias were abundant, and we even spotted a few Tri-colored Munias.
Wetland Wonders:
The main lake was alive with activity, hosting Cotton Teals, Bronze-winged Jacanas, Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Common Coots, and Grey-headed Swamphens.
Sharing Knowledge and Passion:
Throughout the walk, we shared tips and tricks for improving birding skills and discussed the fascinating phenomenon of bird migration. The birding activity was at its peak, making it a truly memorable experience for all participants.
