Full day birdwatching in Mumbai
Mr. Chris Schmid, a passionate birder hailing from the USA, embarked on an incredible birding expedition with Jungle Buddies amid Mumbai’s scenic landscapes. This full-day private tour promised a unique and diverse birdwatching journey spanning three distinct habitats, each offering the opportunity to spot a variety of bird species.
The adventure commenced at the break of day when our experienced naturalist, Rajesh Poojary, warmly greeted our guest. Our first destination was the renowned Karnala Bird Sanctuary, a lush forest teeming with vibrant birdlife. The woods resounded with the harmonious calls of our feathered friends.
Our sightings included the charming Banded Bay Cuckoo and Indian Cuckoo, serenading us with their melodic calls. Above, Crested Serpent Eagles gracefully soared, while a flock of Small Minivets added splashes of vivid hues to the forest canopy. The highlight of this leg was the sight of the Crimson-Backed Sunbird, an endemic species of the Western Ghats. As we ventured deeper, the melodious song of the Malabar Whistling Thrush accompanied our journey.
After a thrilling morning, we paused for a delightful lunch at a local eatery before continuing to Haji Malang in the Kalyan region. This area houses the last remaining grasslands in the Mumbai Metropolitan region and is known for its diverse grassland and scrubland habitats. Here, we were treated to sightings of the elusive Painted Francolin, a master of camouflage that reveals itself only through its calls. Graceful Ashy Woodswallows performed aerial acrobatics, while Baya Weavers showcased their meticulous nests. The Tri-colored and Red Munias added vibrant hues to the landscape.
As the day began to wane, we journeyed to Nilje Lake in Dombivli, an oasis for various waterbird species amidst the bustling city. This serene lake provided the perfect backdrop for waterfowl enthusiasts. Our patient observation from the lakeside was rewarded with the sight of Bronze Winged Jacanas, gracefully walking on floating vegetation. A moment of excitement ensued when we spotted the elusive Cinnamon Bittern, known for its secretive nature. The majestic Brahminy Kite graced the sky above, concluding our birding experience at Nilje Lake.
Jungle Buddies’ full-day private birding tour encompassed picturesque locations and a plethora of avian wonders, crafting an unforgettable experience for our guests. Not only did Mr. Chris observe a wide array of bird species, but he also checked several lifers off his list.
As we concluded the tour, we bid farewell to Mr. Chris, leaving him with cherished memories of his birding odyssey. We eagerly await his return for more avian adventures amidst Mumbai’s diverse and captivating landscapes.
