Nestled near Pune, Saswad Grasslands is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. This 6,000 sq km expanse pulsates with life, belying its initial impression of a barren landscape. Despite its “semi-arid wasteland” classification, Saswad is a thriving ecosystem teeming with over 350 bird species and 25 mammal species.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Birders flock to Saswad to witness a dazzling array of avian wonders. Grassland species include Indian Courser, Yellow wattled Lapwing, Greater Grey Shrike, Rock-bush Quail, Rain Quail, Greater Short-toed Lark, Indian Eagle-Owl, and Indian Peafowl.  Saswad offers a breathtaking birdwatching experience. The grasslands of Saswad are a stage for a diverse cast of mammals. Home to the Indian grey wolf, the striped hyena, the Indian gazelle (chinkara) and the Bengal fox.

While teeming with life, Saswad faces threats like encroachment, agricultural expansion, and a proposed international airport project. These factors jeopardise the delicate balance of this irreplaceable ecosystem.

Target species expected: Saswad in monsoon turn into a bird watcher’s paradise, one can sight grassland species including Indian Courser, Yellow wattled Lapwing, Greater Grey Shrike, Broad-tailed grassbird, Striolated bunting, Rock-bush Quail, Rain Quail, Greater Short-toed Lark, Indian Eagle-Owl, and Indian Peafowl. If we are lucky, we may also come across mammals like the Indian grey wolf, the striped hyena, the Indian gazelle (chinkara) and the Bengal fox.

Day 1: Dive into the World of Saswad Grasslands

  • Embark on a scenic drive to Saswad town, a charming gateway to the birding paradise.
  • Check-in and freshen up at FabHotel Jadhavwadi, your comfortable home for the night.
  • Refuel with a delicious lunch and prepare for an afternoon filled with avian encounters!
  • Immerse yourself in the vast expanse of Saswad grasslands on your first birding session. Keep your eyes peeled for a dazzling array of birdlife!
  • Return to the hotel for a relaxing evening and dinner. Rest up for another exciting day of exploration.

Day 2: Chasing the Dawn Chorus

  • Rise with the sun and head out to nearby birding hotspots, experiencing the magical symphony of the dawn chorus. Witness the peak activity of birds as they start their day.
  • Savour a delightful breakfast amidst nature, followed by a field lunch to keep you energized throughout your adventures.
  • After collecting your luggage from the hotel and a quick freshen-up, enjoy a final birding session (subject to departure schedule).
  • Bid farewell to Saswad as you head back to Pune Station and board the Indrayni Express for your comfortable return journey to Mumbai.
