Description

About the birding site:

Tungareshwar wildlife sanctuary is located near the twin city of Vasai and Virar in the Palghar district. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 85 sq. km which is mostly hilly. It also forms a corridor between SGNP and Tansa wildlife sanctuary and hence is crucial for the movement of wildlife between these regions. There is a temple about 3 km from the Tungareshwar WLS base that is regularly visited by devotees. The dominant vegetation is of the deciduous type however as one reaches the top of the mountain one can notice a stark difference in the vegetation changing from deciduous in the foothills to semi-evergreen type at the peak. With the change in altitude, the bird life also differs. The sanctuary can be accessed from two locations, one being Vasai and the other being Vajreshwari which is not usually recommended.
