Description
About: Built in 1979 on the banks of the River Kalyanthane, Barvi Dam is a freshwater source for major regions of MMR. The backwaters of the dam are surrounded by lush green deciduous forest patches and small hillocks, which makes it an ideal home to large carnivores like the Indian Leopard, Barking deer and a few other mammal species, not just mammals or orchids, the Barvi forest is also considered a heaven for bird watchers.
The road that drives through the forest is an excellent place to spot many winged beauties, if luck you may come across a Mottled wood owl or a shy Malabar Trogon somewhere in the forest valley.
Nearest Train station: Atgaon
Target species expected: The Barvi forest & Dam area hosts approximately 170+ bird species, including uncommon migratory ducks such as the Tufted Duck, Common Pochard, and Eurasian Wigeon, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Furthermore, Barvi provides an ideal setting for capturing images of the Indian Pitta, Racket tailed-drongo, Cinerous tit, White-naped Woodpecker and Jungle Owlet, adding to its allure as a remarkable destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
