Celebrating National Wildlife Week
Raising Awareness in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Every year, the first week of October marks National Wildlife Week in India—a vital time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wildlife, conservation, and its essential role in our ecosystem. Continuing our commitment to nature education, Jungle Buddies celebrated this occasion with two impactful events focused right here in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Event 1: Mumbai City – A Bird Watcher’s Paradise
On October 9th, we had the privilege of hosting a presentation for the Rotary Club of Thane Hills. Titled “Mumbai City: A Bird Watchers’ Paradise,” the session captivated participants with the surprising beauty of Mumbai’s avian life.

The presentation covered:
-
Our Mission: What activities does Jungle Buddies host throughout the year?
-
Why Bird in Mumbai?: Highlighting the incredible diversity available within the city limits.
-
The Beauty and the Burden: Showcasing the beautiful birdlife alongside the environmental challenges and threats these species face in the bustling metropolis.

The response from the Rotary Club members was excellent, confirming the high demand for such educational sessions. The feedback emphasised that hosting these awareness programs frequently is crucial for engaging citizens, which in turn strengthens conservation efforts for birds and their habitats across the MMR.
Event 2: Birdwatching Trail at SGNP, Manpada

Earlier in the week, on October 6th, we were honoured to be invited by the Nature Information Centre, Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) (North), Yeoor, to lead a special birdwatching trail in the SGNP Manpada area.
The trail was a huge success, thanks in part to the unusually heavy rains that had kept the forest lush and dense late into October. This healthy, vibrant habitat provided excellent sightings for our participants.

This day spent within the deep greenery of SGNP was a powerful reminder of the incredible wilderness hidden just moments from Thane and Mumbai.
Conclusion:
National Wildlife Week is more than just a date on the calendar for Jungle Buddies; it’s a commitment. By hosting educational talks and practical birdwatching trails, we strive to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the incredible wildlife that coexists with us. Thank you to all who participated and helped make our 2025 celebration a truly memorable success!
