Nestled near Pune, Bhigwan Grasslands is a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. This 6,000 sq km expanse pulsates with life, belying its initial impression of a barren landscape. Despite its “semi-arid wasteland” classification, Bhigwan is a thriving ecosystem teeming with over 350 bird species and 25 mammal species.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Birders flock to Bhigwan to witness a dazzling array of avian wonders. The grasslands in the winter attract various raptor species from Central Asia & Europe, like Steppe Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Pallid Harrier, Montague’s Harrier, White eyed Buzzard, Bonelli’s Eagle, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Red-necked Falcon and many more. The array of raptor species makes Bhigwan the perfect place to learn raptor identification. Apart from raptors, the grasslands are home to many species of larks, pipits, sandgrouse, quails, francolins, etc. The grasslands of Bhigwan are a stage for a diverse cast of mammals. Home to the Indian grey wolf, the striped hyena, the Indian gazelle (chinkara) and the Bengal fox.

Day 1: Dive into the World of Saswad Grasslands

Arrive at the Pune Train Station at 10 AM by INTERCITY EXPRESS (12127)
Drive to Bhigwan, stopping for breakfast along the way. (Drive time 2 hours)
Check in – Agnipankh Homestay.
Lunch & Relax.
Session on Introduction to Raptors of Bhigwan by Rajesh.
Evening, Head for the first session of the Grassland Safari.
After the safari, drive back to the homestay.
Discussion on raptor identification.
Dinner & Lights Off.

Day 2: Morning Birding

Early Morning – Head out for the second grasslands safari.
Drive back to the Homestay for breakfast
Discussion on raptor identification.
Bid farewell to Bhigwan as you head back to Pune Station, with an en-route stop for Lunch, and board the DECCAN EXPRESS (11008) for your comfortable return journey to Mumbai.
