Description

About:

Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS) is a lush mountain plateau situated between Vasai and Virar, rising to an altitude of approximately 2,177 feet. Spanning 85 sq. km, it features a unique blend of Dry Deciduous, Moist Deciduous, and Semi-Evergreen forests. The area was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2003 to safeguard the corridor for leopards and other wildlife moving between SGNP and Tansa. Historically, it is best known for the ancient Tungareshwar Mahadev Temple, a pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva that sits deep within the forest. For birders, it is a “hidden gem” because the varying altitudes and forest types attract both dense forest specialists and scrubland birds. It is particularly rewarding in winter due to the high density of migratory flycatchers.

Birding in the sanctuary:

  • The Temple Trail (Main Route): The most popular route is the 3.5 km uphill walk from the base entry gate to the Shiva Temple. The path is wide and follows a steady incline, flanked by dense teak and bamboo patches.

  • The “Ashram” Trail: For serious birders, the trail 7 km beyond the temple, leading toward the Tunga Tok (Highest Point/Balyogi Ashram), is where the forest thickens. Human disturbance is much lower here, and chances of seeing rare forest species increase significantly.

  • The Forest Dept. Water Hole: There is a small, man-made water hole developed by the forest department en route to the temple. During late winter (like February), this is a hotspot for passerines like sunbirds, bulbuls, and flycatchers coming to bathe.

Nearest Train Station: Vasai Road (Western Line)
