Exploring Viva Wetlands

Description

About the birding site:

Located just outside Virar (West), the Viva Wetlands & Shrublands are a vibrant mosaic of seasonal marshes, freshwater ponds, and dry grassy shrublands. It is one of the last few remaining expansive “backyard” habitats in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that hasn’t been fully urbanised. The area is shaped by the monsoon pulse—the lands are used for rice cultivation in the rains and transform into productive wetlands and dry grasslands by February. It is part of the larger ecological landscape that connects the coastal areas of Vasai to the inland hills. Unlike the canopy birding of Tansa or Karnala, Viva is all about wide-open visibility. It is the “Raptor Capital” of the northern suburbs and a critical habitat for shy wetland species like crakes and rails.

Nearest Train Station: Virar (Western)

Birding in the Wetlands: What to Expect – With over 250 species recorded, Viva is incredibly productive.

  • The Marsh & Reed Beds: This is where you find the “skulkers.” Early morning is the best time to scan the edges of the reed beds for secretive birds like the Slaty-breasted Rail or the Greater Painted-snipe.

  • The Main Lake: A central water body usually hosts a large population of Cotton Pygmy-goose (Cotton Teal), Jacanas, and ducks.

  • Shrubland Walk: The paths surrounding the wetlands are lined with acacia and ber bushes, making them perfect for spotting passerines and small birds that prefer dry cover.

  • Sky-Watching: By 9:30 AM, when the thermals start, the “Raptor Show” begins. Look up to see majestic eagles and harriers scanning the ground for prey.
