Six eager bird enthusiasts, armed with binoculars and brimming with excitement, ventured into the verdant wilderness of Karnala Bird Sanctuary on a crisp May morning (May 5th, 2024). The tour was a part of Summer birding tours hosted by #JungleBuddies Tours.

The day unfolded with a delightful serenade from a Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, welcoming them to the sanctuary’s avian haven. Anticipation filled the air as they delved deeper, their senses alert to every rustle and call hidden within the lush foliage.

As they explored further, the forest revealed its feathered gems one by one. An Orange-headed Thrush emerged its vibrant plumage a testament to nature’s artistry. A shy Puff-throated Babbler offered a fleeting glimpse, while White-rumped Shamas danced among the leaves, their songs adding a joyful melody to the atmosphere.

The tantalizing call of the Indian Cuckoo echoed through the trees, inviting a playful game of hide-and-seek. A White-bellied Drongo, its white & black feathers contrasting sharply with the green, added a touch of elegance to the scene.

The birders continued their exploration, encountering a singing Golden-fronted Leafbird, a flock of Grey-fronted Green pigeons, and many more avian residents. A rare Banded Bay Cuckoo made a surprise appearance, a truly special moment that left everyone in awe. 

The day continued with further discoveries, including a pair of colourful Forest Calotes lizards and the majestic flight of a Crested Serpent Eagle.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, it was time to bid farewell to Karnala Bird Sanctuary. With a list boasting 30 bird sightings, each a testament to the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, the birders departed with hearts full of appreciation for the day’s encounters.
